CHENNAI: Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) has urged Southern Railway to publicise job vacancies in a better way so that youth in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala will be able to apply.
"Around 8,000 vacancies are being filled up in the zone. Applications have already been called for to fill up over 4,000 posts. However, due to a lack of publicity here very few people from Tamil Nadu have applied," said N Kanniah, general secretary of the union.
A majority of the vacancies are for posts in the safety department.
According to the union, around 80% of the people who have applied for the posts are from other states because the job advertisement was placed in Employment News, a union government publication.
"Railways are planning to call for applications for the next set of 4,000 vacancies. So, we want them to publicise the vacancies well in the zone so that candidates from here can apply," he added.
Though the Railway Recruitment Commission had issued notification for recruitment in 2007, examinations could not be conducted because of the "son of the soil" agitation and the central pay commission's condition that minimum educational qualification should be 10th standard instead of 8th standard.
The union has also demanded that railways fill up vacancies till 2011.
The union also has demanded that railways restrict online booking of tickets for the first half an hour on days when tatkal tickets open for booking.
Kanniah said online booking should be allowed only from 8.30 am so that people who buy tickets from the counter will be able to get tickets.
