Cash awards for Railway Sport persons who won medals for India in Asian Games- 2010 - Mamtha



The Minister of Railways, Mamata Banerjee has sent her heartiest congratulations to all Indian sports persons including railway players in the Indian contingent who won medals in the 16th Asian Games-2010 which was held recently in Guangzhou, China from 12th to27th  November, 2010.  She said that Railway family and the nation are very proud of them. Railway players have won 15 Medals for India which include 7 Gold medals, 1 Silver Medal and 7 Bronze medals.  India won a total of 64 Medals which included 14 Gold Medals. Thehalf of the total Gold Medals won by India were brought by the Railway players playing as part of the Indian contingent. In athletics, India with 5 Gold Medals stood at second position after China and Railway players contributed in all these winning athletics events namely 10000m, 3000m Steeple Chase, 400m, 400m Hurdles and4x400m Rely.
The Minister of Railways has announced special Minister’s Awards for Railway players winning medals in the Asian Games 2010.  The awards will be Rs. 10 lakh for Gold Medal winner, Rs. 6 lakh for Silver Medal winner and Rs. 4 lakh for Bronze Medal winner. These awards will be in addition to the awards given by Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB).  The awards announced by the RSPB are Rs. 5 lakh for Gold,   Rs. 3 lakh for Silver and Rs. 2 lakh for Bronze and other incentives as admissible. In this way, a Gold Medal winner would get Rs. 15 lakh, Silver winner Rs. 9 lakh and a Bronze winner Rs. 6 lakh.
Continuing its run of glory in country’s sports arena, 113 sports persons from Indian Railways participated as a part of the Indian Contingent in the 16th Asian Games. Railways’ contingent in the Indian squad was perhaps the biggest contingent from a single organization in the country.
Earlier, Indian Railway players won 25 medals for India which included 13 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals and 9 Bronze medals in the 19th Commonwealth Games (CWG 2010) held in Delhi last month.

The Indian Railways, winner of the first ‘Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar’ instituted by the Government of India, always takes lead in promoting sports in the country.  Railways sports persons have been participating in prestigious national as well as international competitions like Asiad, Commonwealth Games, Olympics, other international level sports events and bringing laurels to the nation.   With a galaxy of promising and outstanding sports persons on its roll, since the inception of Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) in 1928, Indian Railways have always been striving hard to take up the new challenges and was very hopeful for a spectacular show in this mega sports event.  Railways has sixteen Padamshree, three Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, five Dronacharya Sammaan, SixDhyanchand Sammaan and 134 Arjun Puraskar to its credit which have been awarded to its sports persons.
