Kolkata: Patients in Kolkata continue to
suffer as the doctors strike in Kolkata's four out of five government hospitals
enters its fourth day on Tuesday.
The state government has warned of initiating
disciplinary action against striking doctors if the cease-work is not withdrawn
by 12 noon on Tuesday.
More than 2000 junior doctors are on strike and
the West Bengal government is likely to recommend cancellation of registrations
of striking intern doctors, sacking of house staff and rustication of
post-graduate students and trainees.
However, the striking doctors are not budging yet.
They are demanding the release of the five arrested doctors from the SSKM
Hospital who were taken into police custody on Sunday for allegedly assaulting
relatives of patients.
The strike started on Saturday at the SSKM
hospital, the state’s biggest government hospital, with doctors demanding more
security after a doctor was manhandled by a patient's relative. It has since
then spread to three other government hospitals.
While the five arrested doctors have now been
released on interim bail, the suffering of patients continue without any promise
of respite.
