Strike evokes little response in TAMILNADU; normal life not hit

Normal life remained unaffected as the dawn-to-dusk nation-wide general strike called by major trade unions evoked little response in Tamil Nadu today.

Police said the strike did not affect normal life as the state Government ensured maintenance of essential services like milk, drinking water, hospitals and power.

Public transport system was maintained, but transactions in banks were affected as bank employees joined the strike. At several places, ATMs ran out of cash, causing hardship to clients.

Train services were also maintained normally.

However, flights on the Chennai-Kolkata route were hit as six flights were cancelled due to the strike in the Left-ruled state, airport sources said.

All central and state government offices, private banks and industries, functioned as usual, though a section of teachers, state government and LIC staff pledged their support to the strike.
