Govt to dissolve dental, nursing councils

New Delhi: Medical education in India is undergoing a big shake up. Following revelations of corruption the Union Health Ministry is likely to disband the Dental and Nursing councils.

After dissolving the Medical Council of India, the dice seemed to be cast for the Dental Council of India. A letter available with CNN-IBN has the Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi asking Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to dissolve of the Dental and Nursing councils. The reasons stated in the letter are malpractices in the councils and harassment of students, teachers and administration of various colleges.

The Minister doesn't give a clean chit to the Health Ministry either. He writes that Health Ministry officials, politicians and doctors have been aware of these malpractices but have not responded so far.

File noting at the bottom of the letter has Ghulam Nabi Azad agreeing with Trivedi and has in fact asked the Health Secretary for follow-up action.

The letter exclusively available with CNN-IBN shows how the Government is working towards dissolving all medical education regulators and making way for the National Council for Human Resource in Health, an over-arching body that will take over all the responsibilities of the regulators.

CNN-IBN had earlier reported how the DCI was granting recognition to ill-equipped dental colleges. An enquiry commission set up by the Health Ministry accused the DCI of allowing mushrooming of dental colleges and misappropriation of funds.

The other serious charge leveled against the DCI is that its inspectors were filing incorrect and misleading reports on dental colleges. But the man in the eye of the storm has been claiming that he cannot be blamed.

"We have heard about inspectors misusing power but I can't personally monitor every DCI member," says Dental Council of India President Dr Anil Kohli.

With large scale irregularities being reported in the dental and nursing councils investigative agencies are now tightening their noose around them.
