Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri, Secretary Defence R&D and Director-General DRDO today launched the Golden Jubilee year celebrations of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), here today. Dr W Selwamurthy, Chief Controller R&D (Life Sciences) gave the opening remarks in the brief function that was attended by galaxy of experts in the area and senior DRDO officials.
In his presidential address, Dr VK Saraswat emphasized the need to ensure widespread availability of the nuclear medicine and related facilities. He said that INMAS has been entrusted with additional responsibility of providing training to medical and Armed Forces personnel in the area of Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear (CBRN) defence. He added that the Institute’s R&D programmes in areas such as radioprotection, radiation dosimetry and medical management and mitigation of radiation injuries will
be given a boost. While acknowledging its scientific contributions, Dr Saraswat expressed the confidence that INMAS will meet all the future challenges in this critical area.
INMAS, a premier DRDO lab having world class research facilities, was founded in 1961 on the advice of great visionary and the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Over the past five decades, INMAS has grown into a multidisciplinary Institute engaged in research and development in certain highly important areas of radiation sciences such as biological radioprotection and non-invasive imaging for managing radiation-induced and other injuries as well as certain other stress conditions faced by armed forces. As a result, INMAS today has a formidable standing in the International scenario.
The launch event for Golden Jubilee Year celebrations also included an exhaustive exhibition of Institute’s scientific contributions including the drugs, formulations, techniques, activities and advisory publications. During this golden jubilee celebrations, that will continue till February 2011, when the Institute completes 50 years, various activities including scientific conferences, symposia, lectures and open house will be organized.
